Updated Oct. 14, 2025by the USAFacts team

As of late September 2025, an average of more than 2.4 million people on average were clearing security in American airports every day. That figure is about 9% higher than the number of passengers in September 2019, the last comparison before the pandemic.

Two million commercial domestic flights were scheduled from April to June of 2025, about 3.5% lower than the same period in 2019.

In spring 2025, nearly a quarter of flights did not arrive on time. That’s the tardiest second quarter for commercial air travel since 2014.

The Bureau of Transportation Statistics defines a flight as on time if it arrives within 15 minutes of the originally scheduled time.
