We must develop a comprehensive trade school program for those who are not compatible to a 4 year university.

Testing - If the Federal government requires testing, then the Federal government should pay for it. With high-stakes testing taking so much time from other instruction, then those demanding the testing should foot the bill.

Students and teachers must be protected for schools to reopen. A $58 billion bill has been in the Senate graveyard since May, a bill that would provide funding for PPEs, training, and facilities.

The Federal government should invest in higher education, funding 2 years of full-time enrollment at state-run universities, vocational schools, or community colleges.

Vouchers - Any school that accepts public funds must demonstrate adherence to the same laws as public schools. This means access for profoundly and severely disabled students, appropriate resources for all students, and necessary auxiliary services. These competencies must be in place prior to the receipt of public funds.

College tuition has outpaced inflation for years with over $1.4 trillion in student debt. I will offer a Senate bill within my first year to make state colleges and universities tuition free, if the student graduates with a 3.0 GPA or higher within 4 years or less. To fund this, this bill will raise taxes on all businesses and corporations making over $100 million a year. Also, the federal government will reduce interest rates by half on all college student loans that graduate within 4 years or less with a 3.0 GPA or higher.

Our children deserve to have teaching methods tailored to their learning style. Every Louisianan deserves a practical and relevant education that makes them productive and employable.

Education

The future of our nation relies on our ability to give our children the education they deserve. I believe that the best way to do this is to get the federal government out of the way, and let our teachers and local school districts build the framework for our curriculum. Our teachers know the needs of their students better than any bureaucrat ever could. I would like to work with educators to put an emphasis on teaching American History and Civics from Elementary through High School. Our children should be well versed on the limits of our government and how our checks and balances work. Coming from a trade background, I want to see our students encouraged to look at alternatives to traditional secondary education. Many companies are in desperate need of tradesmen/women. As the average age of these workers rise, so does the need and the compensation of the positions that must replaced.

The crisis of 2020 is showing us how important schools are for the entire community. Along with family leave and childcare policies, the federal government can support state and local schools with subsidies for STEAM-focused early and late care programs that enrich the educational experience of students and support working families that can’t afford childcare. We should also expand life-skills programs like financial literacy and business development.

If we’ve learned anything from this crisis, it’s that we need to invest more in our children and families. The data is clear, early childhood education lays the groundwork for educational success. Paid family leave improves health outcomes for children and increases workforce participation. Early childhood education and family leave are an investment in America’s future that must be made.  In the Senate, I will fight for our nation’s future by investing in our children and families.

I believe education should be a national priority. The federal government should provide increased funding for state and local education systems to invest in universal pre-k education, increase pay for educators, and expand job training and vocational programs.

Education

In the twelve years I’ve spent in the classroom, I have been fortunate to teach and learn from a great number of students, families, and fellow educators. Each child that I’ve had the opportunity to work with has immense potential, and we owe it to them to fully fund a robust educational system that elevates their brilliance from birth through post-secondary schooling. When policy is made by economists rather than educators, education becomes a private commodity rather than a public good.
