Army Personnel (Land Forces - Worldwide)

The number of personnel supporting national armed land forces (army) around the world numbered about 12.7M in 2019, down from 13.7M in 2009. India has the largest land force with about 1.24M members, followed by China at 1.0M. The U.S. State Department did not report a value for the United States for 2018 or 2019 but set the 2017 U.S. Army at 480k, behind India, China, North Korea, Pakistan and South Korea. The 2019 estimates put the Russian army at 320k and the Ukrainian ground forces at 130k members. Iceland doesn’t have a military and another 115 countries were estimated to have ground force militaries with fewer than 50k members.
