The Census Bureau is in charge of counting the entire US population once every 10 years. Statistical estimates based on samples are published for years between full Census counts. The population includes all people residing in the US, including unauthorized immigrants and people living here temporarily for work or school. It does not include tourists and other temporary visitors.
