Green card holders, also referred to as permanent residents, are authorized to live and work in the US indefinitely. Once approved, permanent residents can access some government benefits, including Social Security, Medicare, TANF, and SNAP, often after a waiting period of five years or 40 quarters of employment. Green cards are issued by US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).
In 2020, the total number of green cards granted was 707,362, a decrease of 324,403 green cards or 31% from 2019.
