Home / Health / Articles / The US won’t have 70% of adults starting COVID-19 vaccinations by July 4

As of June 30, 171.7 million adults have started COVID-19 vaccinations. That’s two out of every three adults, but it’s about 9 million short of the number needed to meet President Biden’s goal of 70% adults starting vaccination by July 4.

Four percent of adults in the US started vaccination in June.

In the final week of June, about 320,000 adults were starting vaccinations daily. If that pace continues, the US would surpass the 70% goal by the end of July.

Sixteen states and Washington, DC, have surpassed a 70% adult vaccination rate by the end of June. Vermont leads all states, with 85% of adults getting at least one shot.

States with the highest adult vaccination rate are primarily in the Northeast.

County data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows how vaccination rates vary in most states.  However not all states report county data, and states do not have county information for all people vaccinated. Based on available data, counties meeting the 70% target are primarily urban areas in the Northeast, Midwest and the West Coast.

Most states have at least one county with an adult vaccination rate of more than 70%.
