Southern and midwestern states bear the brunt of tornado activity in the US; Texas averages 123.8 tornados a year. Missourians have faced the most tornado-related injuries and property damage — $1.7 billion in 2025 — in recent years while Kentuckians had the highest death toll.

Which states have the most tornadoes?

Between 2021 and 2025, every state except Hawaii and Maine recorded at least one tornado, according to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) data. Texas, the 2nd largest state in the US by land area, recorded 619, for an annual average of 123.8. Next-highest were Illinois (569) and Mississippi (559).

The largest state overall, Alaska, recorded a single tornado.

Even though Texas recorded the most tornadoes from 2021 to 2025, no Texas county was in the top 15 for tornado activity.

The Americans most likely to deal with a tornado were the residents of Washington County, Colorado: they witnessed 51 tornadoes during this period, 24 more than any other county and an annual average of 10.2. Next-most were Cook County, Illinois (home to Chicago) and Mobile County, Alabama (home to the city of Mobile); two of the top five counties were in Illinois.

How many people are injured by tornadoes in the US?

In 2025, 16 states reported residents sustaining tornado-related injuries, and 9 reported deaths. Nationwide, 256 people were injured during tornadoes and 64 were killed.

The most fatalities were in Kentucky (19 deaths), Missouri (16), Mississippi (9) and Tennessee (9). Missouri and Mississippi had the highest injury totals (59 and 43, respectively) and together accounted for 40% of all tornado-related injuries nationwide.

Missouri had the most tornado injuries in 2025, and Kentucky had the most fatalities.

How much property damage is done by tornadoes in the US?

NOAA reported $1.9 billion in property damage in 2025, so Missouri’s $1.7 billion in damages was 89% of all tornado-related property damage. The next-most-impacted state was Illinois at $30.2 million.

Ten states reported crop losses, with Mississippi reporting the most: $2.6 million of crop damage.

Another sixteen states and Washington, DC, reported no crop or property damage due to tornadoes at all.
