This is the total number of children adopted over the course of the fiscal year — from October of the previous year through September — where a public child welfare agency was involved. Not all of these children entered foster care prior to being adopted.
There were 57,881 children adopted with public child welfare agency involvement in 2020, a decrease of 12.5% or 8,327 children from 2019.
